At Charleston Middle School in Charleston, Illinois
2007/2008

During the 2007/08 school year, students in Mr. Tim McCollum and his student teacher Mr. Xander Hardt's 8th grade science classes at CMS are exploring another world - Mars. They are conducting the work of mission scientists by examining surface images of Mars captured by the Mars Odyssey Spacecraft. The students will eventually generate a question which will be submitted in a proposal to the Arizona State University Mars Education Program. If the proposal is accepted, the orbiting Mars Odyssey Spacecraft will be directed to capture a new image for analysis by the CMS students and to aid in the research of the proposal question. The students will be the first to view and analyze the image from Mars and will send the results of their findings to the ASU team. By doing so, the CMS students will contribute valuable scientific information to our present understanding of Mars. This year's CMS MSIP participation will also be the focus of a study by Mrs. Cassie Bowman, doctoral candidate at Harvard University. Cassie will visit CMS later this fall to interview some of our students and examine their work.
