(L Cottage or Folk Victorian )

The L-Cottage or  Folk Victorian format is a ubiquitous architectural form in Charleston, and much of the surrounding area.  Initially constructed on a basic 4-6 room format, often  decorated  with spindles and detailing,  these were the homes constructed for the working families of the community in the period between 1890 and the First World War.

Apparently the residential structure of Charleston was rather varied during this time period as a survey of the City Directories available in the Genealogical Society collection reveals a rather varied occupational history for the occupants of this particular house.  In the City Directories available between 1898 and 1908 the occupant of 1314 Monroe is listed as a Caroline Kennedy, with no occupation given.  However in the same time period in the same block one finds occupants of the other houses listed as cashiers, merchants, real estate, domestic, lumber merchant, reverend, seamstress and clerks.

In the 1912 City Directory the house is listed as occupied by a Dr. I.W. Lee, who is a physician and surgeon, however his office is indicated at a different location.  By 1916 the house is occupied by Mr. Frank Mealy and his wife and daughter.  Mr. Mealy is listed as the Manager of the Charleston Daily Courier, apparently having received a promotion from the position of Foreman, which he held in 1912, when he lived at another location.  In 1919 Mr. Mealy and his wife and daughter are still at this location, but the daughter is listed as a student, indicating she is probably attending the Normal School.   By 1924 only Mrs. Mealy and her daughter are listed at the residence, with the daughter being listed as a teacher.  In the final directory consulted for this short survey, 1937,  Mrs. Mealy and her daughter Margaret, now a teacher at Lincoln School are still at this residence.
