| Order of business
is suspended to allow Doug McDermand, executive director of the Coles County

explained the mission of the CCRPC, noted that historic preservation is
“central” to its mission, and outlined ways the commission could be a resource

| b. Historic Districts
Chairman Fischer noted that he does not want the commission to forget that our first goal once we get our educational materials planned is to establish historic districts in the city. Ad hoc member Small noted that she has nominations for the National Historic Register for two districts: Sixth and Seventh Streets and the Square. She will pass these on to the commission for local use. |
|||
| c. Certified Local Government.
Fischer reported that he has received almost all of the resumés needed to complete the application. Grant information from the state has still not been distributed. |
|||
| d. Community events.
Discussion centered on the flier being designed by Morice and McElwee. The consensus of the group was that it should include what the commission is set up to do instead of focusing solely on what it will not do. |
|||
| d. Web site update.
Fischer reported that what is in boldface type on the Web site is finished. He would like members to e-mail him any links to historic preservation groups they might have. |
|||
| d.Charleston’s 175th birthday celebration.
Fischer has been talking to Cal Smith about ways to participate in the celebration. Since one of the commission’s goals is to educate people about historic preservation sponsoring something at the celebration might be a way to kick off our work. Among possibilities discussed were: a slide show, a walking tour, and an information booth. |

Small noted that the commission needs to include in its budget request money to pay for one or more members to attend the state conference on historic preservation and money for pamphlets and fliers. Fischer again asked that commission members look over a “flow chart” outlining the process for application for landmark status to make sure that the timing is right, that we have enough time built into the process to complete it within the ordinance’s requirements. The next meeting was set for 7:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, in the council chamber in City Hall. |
