COURSE DESCRIPTION:  An individually planned internship in a community health agency or organization.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  • Provide practical experiences in health-related settings under appropriate supervision by competent personnel.
  • Enhance student understanding of the agency/organization’s role in the health care delivery system in contributing to individual or community quality of life.
  • Facilitate development of student’s personal skills and knowledge needed for professional growth and employment.

 

STUDENT OBJECTIVES
As a result of the internship experience, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the agency’s overall structure and function.
  • Identify the relationship of health education activities to the goals of the agency.
  • Identify the various personnel of the agency.
  • Describe a variety of methods, techniques, and skills used by the agency in fulfilling its purpose.
  • Assess professional strengths and weaknesses during the internship experience.
  • Assess achievement/skill level in one or more of the practicing competencies contained in the Seven Responsibilities for Entry Level Health Educators* mutually agreed upon by the student and site supervisor and described on the Competencies Task Form
  • Use productivity tools for word processing and basic multi-media presentations

INTERNSHIP CHECKLIST

BEFORE the on-site experience, the student MUST:
____ Attend the Intern Orientation Meeting scheduled in the Fall Semester.

____ Complete the Internship Pre-application Form and submit to the HST Intern Coordinator.

____ Print and review the Internship Application Procedures

____ Print and review the Seven Responsibilities and Compentencies for Entry Level Health Educators AND the Competencies and Task Form

____ Pre-register for HST 4275 during the pre-registration period the semester prior to  interning.

____ Print and review HST Portfolio Guidelines
         Begin Portfolio development.

____ Complete the HST Approval Form for inclusion in the Portfolio.

____ Submit Portfolio by mid term of the semester prior to interning.

____ Begin investigating possible internship sites:
         Review EIU Past Internship Sites
         Review internet directories listed below under "Internship Search Help"

____ Review guidelines for and develop an Resume (Sample 1) (Sample 2)

____ Identify potential internship sites and complete on the Internship Site Identification Form.

____ Submit Internship Site Identification Form and 4 copies of the Resume
         to Intern Coordinator.

____ Follow-up with a phone call to the agency preceptor to arrange an interview after receiving  a copy of the introductory letter sent to the site by the Intern Coordinator.

____During the interview be prepared to discuss with the agency preceptor the Competencies and Task Form and the Seven Responsibilities and Compentencies for Health Educators that tentatively will be need to be addressed during the internship experience.

____ Provide HST Intern Coordinator with beginning and ending dates once internship is arranged.

____ Sign the Student Internship Agreement Form (provided by (HST InternCoordinator) BEFORE leaving campus for the internship.

____Review the Final Instructions

DURING the on-site experience the student MUST:

____ Submit Logs on a weekly basis (details in the HST 4275 WebCt course).

____ Print and provide Preceptor with the Intern Evaluation Forms upon completion of about 120 hours or the first third of your internship and again toward the end (least  a week before internship completion).  A total 2 evaluations are required and will be available at WebCt

____ Communicate with HST Intern Supervisor on a regular basis through WebCt.

____ Complete the Competencies and Task Form in cooperation with the Intern Preceptor and submit by the end of the internship

____ Submit Final Summary Report (details at WebCt) during the last week of the experience OR by the official Last Class Day of the semester - which ever comes first.
