Prerequisites

The prerequisites for Math 1431 are Math 1330, Precalculus (or an equivalent course) and a passing score on the Prerequisite quiz, which will be administered the second week of class.

Textbook

The course covers Chapters 2 - 6 of Calculus, Ninth Edition, by Salas, Hille, and Etgen. You have online access to Chapters 1 - 6 (the Calculus I part) and answers to the odd-numbered problems.

Online Quizzes

There will be a weekly quiz administered online. You will need to register at CourseWare; the CourseWare information link above explains how. Once registered at CourseWare, you will find the online text, access to online quizzes, the test scheduler, and a discussion board for Math 1431.  Also, you need to maintain a C average (70%) on these quizzes to avoid being dropped from the class.

Lab (Recitation session) and Homework

The homework assignment for each week will be given in class; the list of all homework exercises is already posted online.  These assignments will be discussed in the weekly recitation sessions.  The students are strongly encouraged to do the assigned homework problems as working on these exercises is the only way to do well in the class.

Help

The easiest place to get help is your lab session. Here, the TA's will answer questions and go over homework problems. The Department of Mathematics also has a mathematics laboratory (MathLab), located in 222 Garrison. MathLab has student tutors who, on a walk-in basis, offer help with individual problems. MathLab also sponsors test-preparation workshops prior to each of the examinations in the course. You can get online help at http://online.math.uh.edu. The Student Solutions Manual shows how to work odd-numbered problems. And there are the office hours of your instructor and your teaching assistant to go to for help (see below).

Exams

There are three exams scheduled for the weeks given in the exam calendar (see the link above). You will schedule your exam using the CourseWare test scheduler for any available testing time during the week of testing. The comprehensive final exam will be given during the week of December 9 - 15. All exams are departmental exams given at the testing center at CASA.

Grading

   300 points determined by exams 1, 2 and 3 (100 points each)
   100 points determined by quizzes
200 points determined by the final exam
   600 points total
Usually it takes 90 for A, 80 for B, 70 for C, and so on.  This grading scheme is tentative and changes may be made.  All changes will be announced well in advance of the final exam.
