I can't remember all the things that have happened in the past few months. The most profound single statement came last week.

"Tree climbing is a lost art."

That came from an arborist that was trimming trees around power lines. It's a rather deep statement considerign that kids just dont' climb trees or have any trees in their shiney new neighbothoods. The feel of game controllers has replaced the rough scars of climbing bark. Wonder if this will be the panzy generation.

I'm currently sitting in a "Combating Cybercrime" conference jointly sponsored by NCSA and the FBI. The first slide today (day 2) compares cybersecurity today to the keystone cops. Yesterday alot of the discussion surrounded the case I was involved in (Remember to tell the Canopy Club story) and it amazed me how much effort it took to find one teenager in Sweden.

Piper Down (FBI Major case 216)
The Canopy club was one of the hopoff points for this sweedish teenager during his attacks. On the day we were monitoring, we could watch him launch an attack against NASA moffett field. As I heard from the US District Attorney for the area, this specific incident was discussed in a meeting on the 6h floor of the US Dept of Justice in DC. There were apparently alot of offers from the military security branches that were present to personally monitor "the system at the nightclub".

ok, the window is open and I'm already typing, I'll just put my notes here.

RiverGlass in town company sellign security tools based on NCSA research.
*Agencies increasingly chalenged my complex investigations traversing both territorial and jurisdictional boundaries.
*System deployed at Il State Police.
*Problem: Saturation and redundancy of alert messages. Causes "Data saturation"
*Multimodal data causes data overload. Sensors, emails, video, newsfeeds, etc..
*Integrate data sources -> Summarize facts -> Discover patterns -> Priotorize threats -> Document, Collaborate, Operationalize
*System watches/reads websites & blogs for postings regarding events.
**Example was watching for any data surrounding the term "Peroxide" and placing geographic location
*WOW.. example further showed how much data about individuals is out there and how they can cooralate this data together in a easy to use GUI.
*Just looked up their website http://www.riverglassinc.com
* hehe, Talk just finished and the FBI guys are all over Michael about the product. Looks like I just sat through a sales demonstration and didn't even know it.

---------

The final session consists of three attornies in a panel session. One comment made was regarding how much press, attention, wailing should be done about a potential security issue. Congress reacts to the opinion of the public. The public has a vary short attention span. Can you recall what was headline news exactly 6 months prior to today? Houw about 12 months prior? If there's not strong public opinoin and pressure to act now.. and if a decision is not made now, it's chances for success fall greatly with time.

Closing remarks.. expanding infraguard is the preferred mechanism for the FBI to readh out to industry. Tiered approach? Tier what? Meet quarterly.

Oh lord, here we go again.

Every year some people look forward to the new fall TV season. It's no different in Academia, where every fall the political games begin anew. ..and every fall I try to find a way to just get things done despite the best effort of our political players.

Even so, this is still a great season with research and implementations taking the top two priority spots. We'll be doing some new things with data navigation and playing in the information warfare space a bit more. There also some excitement with storage aggregation coming too. Should be fun.

Interesting things that happened today:
VoIP Phones are operational with graphics. Spent some time with Steve to get the graphics and animations functioning properly on the Polycom phones. Looks very promising.

All Macintosh servers are operational! Finally got a good back load of OSX 10.3.6 for Oracle -with- onboard hardware RAID for all internal drives. Very neat and substantial praise for Big Hurt for taking this on so quickly. From Windows to a real os in ony a month, not bad at all ;-)

Played with a PCMCIA wireless cell phone/broadband internet thingie. Old technology, but major cool to get connectivity in the middle of nowhere. Wonder what the monthly charge is for unlimited data on one of these?

Futher progress on risk assessment for Zebre conversion. Oh yah, need to put up a major entry for [[Zebre]]. Suppose I should define what it is first. 9.4.5 [[Zebre]] entry added.

..and next to last, I played with the software to create this. This stems from Mr. Pratte's idea of issuing a thumb drive to every student. If we pre-load the drives with a single HTML file that contains almost every bit of information they could possibly need for the semester, we may get alot of buy in as it being useful. Notice that you can save the source of this page, modify it, and create your own instantly.. all in one file on any platform. Very cool.

I have a 5pm appointment with Sven.
**6pm update.. Sven kicked my ass.

We've put our admin group on display for the holidays. I'm not sure about the viewing hours. =)

There's nothing more interesting than to see the world through other people's eyes. On my first visit to the UK, I thought I would encounter people with a similar mindset that just spoke with a different accent. Boy what a surprise, the view really is different on the other side of the pond and not just on the surface but a deeply different approach to any situation. So, here I am torn between the egotistical experience that is blogging, and yet needing to improve my conversational writing skills. How does one publish without appearing like a bragabon to friends and colleagues? No doubt those of you who know me and are reading this will ponder if I'm full of it or trying to impress or whatever. Bring it up, send an email, call, etc.. I don't mind and I'd rather hear that you think I'm an idiot to my face then hear it on the grapevine. Hopefully everyone else out there will just enjoy the view from another angle.
It's been a while since I've added anything. The hardest part of this app is updating the file on the server. ..well I finally made sshfs work on my mac leopard beta so this is so much easier I have no excuses.

What's up with Grad school and writing a small novella every week and two complete books every semester? I've gotten used to reading little stories to my kids so anything over 10 pages not filled with pastel drawings on every page is strange now. Yes, this does include Cisco technical documents or Blackboard contracts, they use the same wording, just not the good pictures, colors, or shimmering ink. It would be one thing if the topics were something I could apply, but apparently I'm doing things in the proper order as usual. [>img[http://farm1.static.flickr.com/172/434083620_ddcd039f85_m.jpg]] I'm somewhat envious of all those young kids in class who are eager to absorb this information thinking that these fine textbooks are an accurate description of what they have to look forward to in just a few years. I have yet to see a curriculum that contains an office politics 1001 class with a family time management thesis option. All this advanced study and not one chapter on dealing with the pushy department head two divisions over that wants you to do the work while he takes the credit. I suppose that's what real life is for.. but why do I want this degree again? ;-)

The words Spring Break usually bring to mind parties on the beach and fun in the sun. Just got back from an adventure with the family but unfortunately it was a working trip for me. I knew it was going to be a challenge, but never did I imagine what would come up. Leave it to me to bumble into the land of no sleep and constant travel while trying to make the effort to learn things. Everyone else had a good time while I tried to balance work and home and away from home and sleep at the same time. No regrets though, it's more of that life learning that you can't get in a classroom.

Black friday sucks. Just woke up at 3am to get a Wal-Mart "deal".. it's 6am now, I'm back home no deal in hand. "Not available in all stores".. then why advertise it at all!!

The worst part.. I know it was going to happen, it allways does. Why do I even try.
There's an indian saying that whatever you're doing on New Year's day is what you'l be doing all year long. I've allways taken the position that if you really look at whatever you're doing on any given day where you make the majority of the choices, it's a good sign of what's to come. Today was my birthday, and I spent 5 hours of it in a car shuttling myself and my children too and fro from grnadparents to Wife's events. What few hours I did spend at home was comsumed by folding clothes. Piles of clothes being the number one furnishing in our home, I'h hopeful that this s a sign that we are on track to clean the place up a bit. As I look around I can only pray that this is the case.

A curious note about the travel. I went 233 miles in 5.04 hours. The strange bit is I put in the lower grade fuel, 89 octane vs the usual 91, and my fuel mileage went up! From an average of 25mpg to 27mpg. I'm wondering if in the recent surge in demand for gas they didn't add the ethanol or something.

Suji did the rennasance fair in scenic Danville today. Fair looked fair, Danville looked like Danville. not too much more to say about that.

We got home at 3am thismorning after spending the evening of the 2nd at the Canopy. It's so good to hang with old friends that are in many ways a family. I think none of us wanted it to end which is all the more reason to do it more often.

Projects in play:
New mainsite design (system engineering)
New ITS site design & content mgt
Datacenter design
Awesome-O (oosum)
iTunesU
Identity Mgt rework
Disaster Recovery Planning
We're trying NeoOffice for this so hope it turns out well.

NeoOffice Crashed major.. moving this to wiki in hops of better result.

Projects currently on the table are as follows.

Identity management
We are currently trying to get the ID system specifications finalized. We've gone back and forth with the mainframe/banner gorup on how the user id's need to be structured. I think we finally have a consensus and we have an internal working spec. From this point forwatd we are in the coding stages for the latest revision of armadillo. The planned release/final date for Armadillo 1.6 which will include everything necessary for provisioning of open directory accounts is November of 05.

DNS system
The initial concept and design for the new DNS system is complete. We're awaiting final setup of the hardware which I believe is complete, but have not verified. The new system wil be serving DNS by mid September with a final production date of early October.

Final OS installation of Zebre hardware
We are in the final stage sof the OS setup on all Zebre systems. I believe we are complete for all systems except the retorgraded 10.3.6 Xserve boxes needed for the OracleDB system. Estimated completion date for the OS install is the week of September 5th.

Oracle Database
The OracleDB system is still in the OS install stage. We have the test system current up and operational, but we are working through issues using the onboard hardware RAID controller for the boot volumes. These are not major issues as we are using this opportunity to increase our new sysadmin's knowledge of the Apple pltform. We futhter nee dto determin an intial size for the databse so we can properly allocate seid space on the SAN. Extimated completeion of the database installation is the week of September 26th.

Oracle Application Server
There are currently two test instances of the application server in operation. From these test systems, we are depetmining the best approach to the 'identity management problem' and how OID and LDAP should interact. It's a nice spot to be in. Should testing continue at it's present pace, it (the testing) should wrap up around late september. From that we're assuming that production installations of the application server will be complete by October 15th.

Xsan
The Xsan system is waiting on two components.. the initial implementaion of Open Directory and the intial thoughts on how space should be allocated. Robert is working on the Open Directory components and estimates that initial directory population (for testing) will occur in October. Eric is working on the Oracle database requirements and should have nintial space requirements available the week of September 5th.

Interesting things for today.

Animations are now working on the VoIP phones so we have more than one images rotating through. Perhaps if we have a catroonist around we can have billy panther waving or something.

Interviewed a very promising graphic design student. Hopefully things will work well in that area.

Met with apple regarding our support contracts and option available for support and training.

Found out that University of Montana desires to go the apple direction that we have gone for our infrastructure. We now have a friend in montana.

Steven is working toward finding large Asterisk installations again as well as pricing for TDmax hardware.

Installed a completely javascript IM system on spin. Next steps are to link it in to the user database and change the look-n-feele to something more spinnable.

En route to the deserts of Nevada today. Spent some quality time waiting in Indianapolis for ATA to 'fix' the airplane before we could leave. When your departure is an hour delayed because the plane "is delayed in the garage", it dosnt' exactly instill a comfortable feeling. The fact that you're reading this must mean they did an ok job with the duct tape.

So while I'm waiting in the concorse, there's this farm type family dressed in the typical suspenders, overalls, and 80's metal band T-shirts sitting across from me. What looks like the mother is sitting off to one side. There's two boys in their late teens or early twenties that are either brothers or friends sitting next to the father type. The father is reading FHM while the boys are sharing a playboy joking about it with their mother. Woud'nt Dave Letterman be proud if his home town now. Of course, the plane is destined for Vegas so perhaps they were just gettin ready.

Just proves that there's more than porn in Indiana.

I've taken enoughth trips now to see the US as just the abstract shapes you see fom the air. For this trip, we pass over Illinois right where I grew up. I can now corrolate the vectors of flights I would see heading over my back yeard as a kid to cities in the west coast. Kansas is a bunch of squares.. Colorado is a bunch of squares with circles in them.. after that it goes 3D with mountains that look managable. On the ground I'm sure they're impassable, but from the vantage point of this fine Boeing product it's just a little pile of dirt. Still amazing every time.

How many times have I mentioned that I hate Vegas? Given my frequent visits, it's starting to sound hallow. I can't stand all the blinking crap with gilded toppings, the pushers, the barkers, the prostitures and their paper media campaigns, and espically the masses trying to get ahead by betting everything they have then wandering around in shock when it's all gone. I'm hoping and expecting that we will be in the desert most of the time which is much more managable for me although it's going to probably just feel like a colder version of the middle east all over again.

There's some strange things afoot at yea ole NCSA. I've had some conversations regarding last years Fed Cybersecurity conference. It would appear that a major portion of the operation is moving toward the info security sector. Next year marks the magic date when NCSA looses alot of it's base NSF funding so there is alot of retooling in the works to be "competetive" in the research market. They're also gunning heavilty for the top dog biggest supercomputer contract, and probably would be a good fit.

Funny thing when new ideas come to town, the job offers start following. It's great until the ideas and the jobs move out to the coasts for adolescence. I wonder where good ideas go for college, middle age, or retirement? What is the merger equivelant in the cycle of life?

PhD Admissions -- as of June 25 2008

NEW - PLEASE NOTE: Admissions Application Deadline for AY 2008-2009 is January 15, 2008.

Any student with a bachelor's or master's degree and with a substantial background in the humanities, social sciences, or physical sciences is eligible to apply to the doctoral program. All candidates for admission must submit an application for admission along with a $60 ($75 for international applicants) credentials fee, transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate courses taken and grades earned, three letters of recommendation, and Graduate Record Examination scores.

Our application process is now conducted primarily via the world wide web, using the University of Illinois' web-based application through the Graduate College website.

Foreign students from non-English-speaking countries are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) before they come to the University. Depending on the results, they may be required to take further instruction in English after their arrival.

Students are normally admitted to start the program only during the fall term. Only under exceptional circumstances are they allowed to begin it in the spring or summer term. All material for fall admission should be submitted by January 15, 2008.

Important information for applicants to the doctoral program in Communications

The admissions process in the Institute of Communications Research is competitive; that is, all applications are considered at the same time for fall admission (the Institute does not ordinarily admit students at the Spring term). The Admissions Committee members typically begin individually reviewing application files after January 1. Several University of Illinois fellowship deadlines occur in January. Therefore, applications should be received before the January 15 deadline for consideration with regards to these lucrative scholarships. The Committee strives to notify applicants by March 1 of their decisions. Since we do not have a rolling admissions process, it is very important that applicants adhere to the January 15, 2008 application deadline.

Applications submitted electronically at the aforementioned website are accessible by ICR as soon as the application fee has been paid. Applications for which the fee has not been paid, whether paper or electronic, are not released to ICR by the Office of Admissions and Records.

A complete application consists of:
-- Completed application form (submit electronically)
-- Application fee ($60 domestic; $75 international) (pay by credit card if applying electronically or mail to OAR with your paper application form)
-- Statement of plans, including relevant education, experience, research interests, goals and career plans (mail to ICR)
-- Transcripts from all previous colleges/universities attended. Two official transcripts are required from each institution the applicant has attended (mail to ICR)
-- Letters of recommendation. Three confidential letters are required from persons who can evaluate the applicant's academic ability and prospects for success in graduate study (mail to ICR)
-- GRE scores (institution code 1836)
Writing samples are not required.

OAR's mailing address is:

Financial Aid

Financial aid is available in the form of assistantships, fellowships, and tuition and fee waivers. Students of color underrepresented in communications research are eligible for University fellowships. Most Institute students eventually receive some kind of financial support. The application for admission includes a section to be completed if you wish to be considered for financial aid. Insofar as possible, the Institute makes financial aid and admission decisions simultaneously.

Teaching assignments are also periodically available in other University departments or programs - for example, Advertising, Journalism, Speech, English, Business and Technical Writing, Unit for Cinema Studies, and Agricultural Communications - and in the communications program at Parkland College. Students with editing, writing, computer programming, keypunching, tutoring, or other skills often can find support in other units of the University. Usually these positions must be obtained once you are on campus and can arrange interviews. A few students also find part-time employment with the local media.

Residency

The doctoral degree requires a minimum of 96 hours of credit: 64 course-work hours and 32 thesis hours. At least 64 of these hours must be earned as a graduate student in courses meeting on the Urbana-Champaign campus. After the residency requirement has been fulfilled, a student may petition the Graduate College for permission to register in absentia for thesis credit. Students entering with a master's degree (or it's equivalent in graduate course work) may be given credit for part of it in completing the required 96 hours, but this does not waive the residency requirement.

There is a lot of flexibility and power in [[ReminderMacros]]. You can set a reminder to fire on a particular date like August 8th, or a more non-specific date like "every Friday". Edit this tiddler and view the source to see the ReminderSyntax
!!!!reminder examples:
<<reminder month:8 day:17 title:"@@color(red):August 17th@@">>
<<reminder dayofweek:5 title:"Next Friday" >>
<<reminder dayofweek:5 day:13 title:"Next Friday the 13th" >>
For more advanced examples, see: [[Personal Reminders]] and [[Holidays]]
!!!![[showReminders]] example:
You can also use the showReminders macro to search through all of your tiddlers and list the ones that will fire within a range from today

For more advanced usage, see [[showReminders]] and [[showRemindersSyntax]].

<<showReminders leadtime:30 >>

This is the same showReminders call, but formatted as a table.

<<showReminders leadtime:30 format:"|DIFF|TITLE|TIDDLER|" >>

The below call will show all reminders in tiddlers that are not marked examples.
<<showReminders leadtime:30 tag:"!examples">>

!!![[displayTiddlersWithReminders]] example:
displayTiddlersWithReminders has exactly the same [[syntax|showRemindersSyntax]] and arguments as [[showReminders]], but instead of printing out a list, it will open any tiddlers that have reminders that will fire in the searched time.
