This brick clad home at 227 Jackson is a classic example of a Four Square  house, one of the house types that dominated building styles from the turn of the century through the 1920's.

The Frommel family is a quintessential example of the american story.  Frederick Frommel immigrated from Germany to America in 1854, moving  to Charleston from Cincinnati in 1868.  From that time until 1990, the family owned and operated  a number of business, with the Frommel Hardware store, located on the south side of the square at 618 Jackson, being the most familiar to city residents, as it was in business for over 80 years at the same location.

The house at 227 Jackson was built in 1910 by C.D. Mitchell and occupied by Albert G. Frommel, a son of Frederick, and a founder of the family hardware business.  A survey of available City Directories indicates that some member of the Frommel family lived in the house continiously from its construction until 1989.
