Short Bio

I was born and raised in Ellendale, North Dakota, and graduated from Ellendale High School. My BA degree in Mathematics and German is from North Dakota State University. Directly following this degree I studied for one year at the University of Heidelberg in Germany under a Fulbright grant. I then taught high school mathematics and German for three years in Lehr, North Dakota. My masters degree in mathematics is from Illinois State University. I then pursued a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at theFlorida State University under the direction of Dr. Eugene Nichols. After completion of this degree I taught one year at Tallahassee Community College prior to coming to Eastern Illinois University as an assistant professor in mathematics and student teaching coordinator for secondary mathematics teachers. I became a Full Professor in 1986. I am a member of the NCTM, MAA, ICTM, EC2TM, and the Fulbright Association. I was one of the faculty advisors of the NCTM Affiliate Group Math Energy , a mathematics club for elementary and middle level students. I am married to Petra Gerling and we have four children: Andy (an immigration attorney in California, Susie (an attorney who graduated in 1999 from Washington University School of Law and is now with the law firm of Clayton-Johnston, P.A. in Gainesville, Florida), Danny ( a BA and MA graduate of EIU and student of the University of Amsterdam), and is now a doctoral student at the University of Texas, and Bobby (2001 EIU graduate and currently an IT/networking expert in California. I enjoy golf, tennis, photography, travel, gardening, and too many other hobbies to have any time for. We are moving to Alachua, Florida in February of 2004.
