Course Description: Overview of the early adolescent development of middle/junior high education, curriculum and organizational patterns, planning instruction and the teacher's role in the middle/junior high school.

Prerequisites: ELE/JHE 2000 and ELE 2320. Prior or concurrent enrollment in Psychology 3521 is recommended.

Purpose of the Course: This course is designed to help future middle/junior high teachers understand early adolescents and the unique school environment that should exist to respond to their needs. The class is designed to develop within each teacher an awareness of physical, emotional, social and intellectual growth taking place during these years.

Muth, K. Denise and Alvermann, Donna E. (2nd Edition, 1999). Teaching and Learning in the Middle Grades. Allyn & Bacon, Boston, Massachusetts.

Charles, C.M. (5th Edition, 1996). Building Classroom Discipline. Longman Publishers, White Plains, New York.

Outcomes for all MLE/JHE Classes:

Develop a desire for lifelong learning in students and personally display one’s own desire for lifelong learning, including self-evaluation skills.

Demonstrate good communication skills.

Demonstrate and exhibit sensitivity to student’s feelings.

Design instruction to develop and utilize the cognitive processes by which pupils learn.

Demonstrate knowledge of facts and an understanding of fundamental principles, ideas,

and relationships among various knowledge domains.

Demonstrate knowledge of past and present developments, issues, research and social influences in the field of education.

Outcomes Specific to this Course:

Provide for the uniqueness of individuals and foster appreciation for those differences.

Strive to model and develop in students intellectual, social. ethical and moral skills and

behaviors.

Perform sucessfully within the social and political contexts of schools and community.

Design instruction and evaluation to promote a healthy self-concept in students.

Course Requirements:

All work is due on the date specified in order to receive full credit. One point will be taken off for each day it is late.

1. Attendance and class participation are essential. (2 points taken off for every absence.)

2. Take comprehensive notes.

3. Reaction paper to each film and video shown. Each should be a minimum of one page

and handed in the class period following the showing of the film or video. These

reaction papers should be typed and should include a brief summary, how this might be

useful in your teaching and your impression.

4. Design a two-week core unit. The unit should contain the following:

    1. First page should be a cover sheet designed by you with the topic of the unit, and your name and grade level.
    2. The rationale, table of contents, course rubric for assessments, 5 web sites utilized and grading scale should be included in the unit
c. Individual lessons should have Illinois State Goals

e. Implementation procedures

f. Materials needed

    1. Assessment tools (3 minimum) including developing a rubric for how many
points each assessment is worth. If a test is given it must be included in your

unit with a key Present the unit to class.

h. Resources used (Textbook, etc.) i. Lesson plans must be the in the EIU/Madeline Hunter format including any

information used from the Internet. Additional information will be given in

class along with a rubric for the unit.

j. One lesson needs to be a technology driven lesson.

5. Locate 5 WWW sites about your area of concentration. Give the Internet address, tell

why this site is appropriate and incorporate into your unit plan.

6. Present to the class a group presentation about one component of the middle school.

(interdisciplinary units, teaming, exploratory, advisory, flexible scheduling, grouping

practices, academic enrichment) This should be a 20 to 30 minute presentation. You

need a lesson plan, group participation for the class and handout for each class

member. You must also used visual aids and the overhead. All students must

participate in the presentation. Additionally you may demonstrate or act out examples

for your presentation

7. Develop and describe the discipline plan you will use in your own classroom. Be sure

to include the following:

1. Your goals/rules

2. Implementation procedures

3. Reward system (if used)

4. Consequence system if students fail to meet stated goals

This should be no more than 4 type written pages.

8. Present to the class a group presentation about one discipline methodology from the

text Building Classroom Discipline. This should be a 20-30 minute presentation. You

need a handout for each member of class. Discuss components, strengths and weakness.

9. One day lesson plan in your area of concentration based on the EIU format

10. Begin work on your portfolio

11. Mid Term and Final

Everything (except exams) Turned In Must be Typed!!!!

This grading system is subject to change by the instructor
