THUNDER ON THE BAY

                While on Regatta Patrol mile 327 UMR(Quincy, IL) August 21 1999  members of Division 8, Eight             Western Rivers Region, Coast Guard  Auxiliary had the opportunity to escort  the replica of Christopher Columbus' ship "The Niña"  through their patrol zone as she made her passage by Quincy, IL  down river  from       Burlington, IA.  Burlington, IA being her last port of call.

Additional Coast Guard Auxiliary members from Flotilla 84 that also assisted as crew during operation Thunder on the Bay were Randolph Calhoun and Chris Urban.
OPSAIL 2000

Penelope Clay and Dr. Luis Clay Méndez, two Auxiliarists from the Division 8, 8WR were transported with a USCG task force to participate in the first leg of OPSAIL 2000, called Regata 2000 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
They served as interpreters, crew at two Coast Guard vessels and coxswains at three Auxiliary facilities.  To the left, the crew of the 41' taxi boat that ferried personnel from the base to the mainland.
Among the many highlights of the three-week experience, were visiting many foreign tall ships and being piped aboard the CG Barque Eagle, for a gradiose tour of the inside of the vessel.
