ESC 1400These will be your current grades as I have posted them on the web. Note: if the majority of class handed in a lab early I will count it in the total, even though it's not officially due yet - that will help explain some of the lower scores.
Review Sheets for Quizzes
I will post review sheets for the various quizzes and midterm that we
have for the class. Note - the review sheets are only meant to
help you study, there may be additional information on the actual
quizzes that isn't on the review sheets.

Scope of Course
During this course, I hope that you'll gain an appreciation of science
and the world around us - specifically how weather and climate can, and
does, relate to your life and the community. Everyone should be able to
discuss, and give examples of their significance to our everyday life
and why they're important. There are a number of
climatological important issues that will affect the way you live the
rest of your life, such as natural hazards from severe weather, global
warming, air pollution: I want you to be able to critically assess
those
issues, so you don't have to depend on Rush Limbaugh, Al Gore, or Ralph
Nader to do your thinking for you.
Students with Disabilities (Whether learning,
physical, hard
of hearing, psychiatric, or sensory)
Eastern Illinois University promotes equal educational opportunities
for students with disabilities. If you have a disability and may need
any assistance, please notify your instructor and make an appointment
immediately with the Office
of Disability Services (9th Street Hall, or Office Phone: 581-6583,
Voice TTY: 581-6583, Fax: 581-7208)
Makeups, Missed, and Late Assignments:
“Make ups” are generally not allowed except in the most unusual and
dire of circumstances. Questions of the Day cannot be made
up. If a “make up” is allowed, it is best you discuss the reason
with me ahead of time, not after the fact. Late lab assignments
will be docked 5 points per day.
Classroom policy
I assume you are in this class to learn so disruptions will not be
tolerated. Not only is this disruptive to me, but also to your fellow
classmates. With this in mind, I ask that you arrive to the class on
time and that there be no classroom conversations or other
distractions. If you must talk, please take it outside, or I
will ask you to do so. Pagers, beepers, or cell phones are not
allowed to ring in class.
Grading
Grading will be based on merit; that is, you will be
graded primarily against your fellow students. A tentative
breakdown is as follows:
Labs: 10 pts. each. Labs will cover the basics of weather and climate beginning with the metric system and progress through general variables (temperature, pressure, etc.) and maps to specific maps. There will be fourteen (14) labs. Labs will be due one week after we begin them. It is best if you read the labs before coming to the lab that week - certain labs require calculators or colored pencils.
Questions of the Day: 3 pts. each. The Questions of
the Day will be handed out at the beginning of each class and are due
at the end of class. As such, they cannot be made up. The question will
concern some aspect of that day's lecture. Total value: approximately
90 pts.
N.B.:
For any “Weather and Climate” term that is misspelled, you shall loose
1/2 point the first time it is misspelled on a quiz or
examination. If you find a misspelled word on my web site and
point it out to me before we get to it, I will credit the class with
one bonus point.

Tutoring
The Geoscience Club, composed of geology and geography members, will
hold free tutoring sessions in room 1060 PHYS. As soon as they
have finalized their schedule, I will let you know. The members
are very good at reviewing concepts covered in class and can help you
if you are having difficulties in lab as well.
Class Schedule
N.B.: Assignments should be completed before class -
read the chapters and review the labs.
