Economics 4802: Intermediate Microeconomics

1. TEXTBOOK : Microeconomics , Pindyck and Rubinfeld, 5 th edition.

2. COURSE OBJECTIVE: This course provides a broad spectrum of economic behavior of consumers, producers and decision-makers.

3. COURSE OUTLINE:

  • The Basics of Demand and Supply
  • Elasticity of Demand and Supply
  • Consumer Choice
  • Production
  • The Cost of Production
  • Market Structure
  • Regulation, Deregulation, and Antitrust
  • Labor Markets and Wage Determination
  • Monopsony and Labor Market
  • Capital, Interest, Entrepreneurial Ability and Profit

4. EXAMINATION AND GRADING SCALES: There will be:

Three Exams (25% each): 75%
Homework and Quizzes: 20%
Research Paper: 5%

Notes:

  1. Assignments will be due as announced in the class and late homework/paper will NOT be accepted.
  2. You are required to write a five-page long paper related to microeconomics using proper English. The use of a style manual, such as the American Psychological Association's Publication Manual is strongly recommended.
  3. Due Dates:

    Topic and Outline: Thursday, February 5, 2004
    Paper: Tuesday, April 20, 2004
    Presentations: Tuesday, April 27, 2004

Grading Scales:

A 90-100
B 80- 89
C 70- 79
D 60- 69
F 59 and below

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are required to attend classes. One unexcused absence will be allowed. For each additional unexcused absence 3 percent will be deducted from the total points.
