Frisco Pigeon Mambo |
Possession |
Memoirs of an Invisible Man |
| C.D. Payne offers up lab pigeons on the lam in “Frisco Pigeon Mambo.” The birds escape the lab, but must face alcohol and tobacco addiction outside while they try to live their lives as free birds in San Francisco. There’s comedy, but also drama, as the feathered heroes remain free. Don’t mistake them for pigeons, they’re really humans with feathers. | O.K. It's a romance. It's also about academia. Maybe that's why it's of interest to me. It's two love stories - one modern-day and the other historical. You can't take it too seriously - if an academic did what the hero does (take historical documents from a library) there would be serious consequences. But - also take a look for the cinematography. There are some great shots here. Based on the British novel, I preferred the movie. In the novel, the hero is kind of a wimp. | Harry F. Saint wrote an interesting update of the “Invisible Man” in 1987. An explosion makes Nick Galloway, a securities specialist, invisible. Realizing that the government and others would like to cage and study him, Nick runs for it. A movie with Chevy Chase was based on this book. What an injustice (it ranks right up there with Robin Williams as the “Bicentennial Man.”) Read the book. |

Hiero's Journey |
Boz Scaggs |
Earlier Issues of "Expand Your Mind" |
Great fantasy. Hiero is a priest and a warrior in a world where a nuclear war has resulted in lost technology and mutant life forms. Bears approach human intelligence. His "morse" is also somewhat telepathic. The "bad guys" are lethal mutations called, appropriately, leemutes.

Released a year ago, Boz Scaggs Greatest Hits Live album brings back all the best of the last 30 years. That includes everything from Georgia to Lido Shuffle. Are they hopelessly 70s hits? I can’t tell. They sounded just as good on a recent PBS special. |
