Chemistry 2430 Quiz #4 - 10 points - Dr. Howard Black - September 15, 1999 -KEY

1. (2 pts) Name the following molecule, being sure to address cis/trans or E/Z geometries where appropriate.

Z-2,6-dichloro-4,5-diethyl-1,4-octadiene
2. (3 pts) Draw an energy diagram in the box, starting from the "starting materials" (S.M.) line, which has the following features:

a. the overall reaction is endothermic.
b. the reaction is two steps, i.e., has a reactive intermediate.
c. the second activation energy, Eact, is smaller than the first.

Please label transition state(s)(TS), reactive intermediate(s)(RI), activation energy of the RDS (Eact), and enthalpy (DH).

3. (4 pts) Complete the following reactions. If more than one product is produced, draw only the major one.

4. (1 pt) In 20 words or less, please explain the difference between a reactive intermediate and a transition state.

A reactive intermediate contains only fully formed or fully broken bonds.  A transition state, on the other hand, features partially formed or partially broken bonds, and thus is far more energetic than a reactive intermediate.
