Chapter 8 (part): Population Structure

-How are societies affected by aging populations?

-How did Baby Boomers adjust to the threat of depressed wages?

-What is the natural sex ratio?  How does China’s current sex ratio compare to the natural ratio?

-Understand the dependency ratio and how it’s calculated

-Age and Sex Structure (Population Pyramids)

-Be able to interpret a population pyramid in terms of development issues: (for example, what can you tell me about a particular country by examining its population pyramid?  Is it developed, underdeveloped, youthful, aging?)

-What's the difference between a stable and a stationary population?

-The Role of Localized Migration Patterns in altering population structures (Understand the San Diego example)

-Be able to discuss the reading on Saudi Arabia from your textbook

 

Chapter 9: Aging
-Understand the global distribution of aging populations (i.e., where are the older populations?  Why there?)

-Understand the key aspects of the demographic shift in the U.S. related to the age transition.  Consider labor force (including retirement and job performance), income and marital status
-Video: World in the Balance. What are the key differences between the demographic situations in Kenya and Japan as discussed in the video?

-Case Study: The Graying of Japan
-Understand the social and economic implications of Japan's aging population

-Understand the role of state capitalism in Japan

-How has Japan responded to a graying workforce?

Chapter 11: Urbanization
-Be able to define the term "urban" as discussed in class and understand global urban patterns
-Understand the urban transition as it played out in the United States (i.e., the rise of the suburbs in the post WWII period and the reasons for that shift)
-Understand the general global urban patterns
-What are “ethnoburbs”?
-What is/was urban renewal?  What are some criticisms of this practice?
-What are the pros and cons associated with gentrification?  How does the Cabrini Green case study illustrate the controversy surrounding both gentrification and urban renewal efforts?

-Be able to discuss the questions posed on Quiz 5: What is the “urban transition” and how does it fit in with the other “transitions” we discussed over the course of the semester?

 

Chapter 13: Policy
-Be able to “pull it all together”: understand the interrelationships of the various “transitions” we talked about in this class: demographic, mortality, fertility, age, nutrition and urban

-What are the three potential goals related to the drafting of population policies?

-Understand the difference between direct and indirect population policies

-Case Studies: Egypt, India, China and Singapore.  What are the key components of the strategies employed by the case study countries?

-Case Study: U.S.  Understand the development of U.S. policy regarding fertility, mortality and immigration.

-What was the bracero program?

-Understand current US domestic and international policy

 

Article Two: Remittances in India. How has the remittance situation changed in India in recent years? How does India compare with other countries in terms of its remittance inflows?  What can account for India’s remittance situation at present?

 

Article Three: Japan’s Changing Demography (Cloud, or silver linings?). How does the article fit in with the overall context of the course?
