Study Guide: Final Exam (Dec 15th)

Chapter Nine: Development

-Understand the key components of the HDI and know roughly where different regions fall within the index (i.e., N. America scores high on the index and would be considered a region of MDCs)

-What are some other key measurements for comparing countries (such as GDP per capita)?

-Understand the key social, economic and demographic indicators of development

-What is micro-credit and why has it been established in many LDCs?

-What is significant about the Grameen Bank?

-Understand the key points of the video on micro-credit

 

Chapter Fourteen: Resource Issues

-Be able to define and provide examples of renewable and non-renewable resources.

-When are water and timber considered non-renewable resources?

-Know the general pattern of global energy consumption. (What regions consume the most/least energy?)

-Understand the major issues surrounding fossil fuels (i.e, problems, availability, political/economic issues, etc.)

-Be up-to-date on the issue of global warming including the facts, the unknowns and the dissenters opinions concerning the theory.

-Be able to discuss the key aspects of water pollution including: examples of point and non-point source pollution (which is more damaging to the environment?), the distribution of the global water supply, the effects of water pollution (eutrophication of water bodies) and typical water use in the average American household.

-What are the key types of air pollution? 

-Take a stance on the global warming and climate change debate drawing from class discussion and the key points outlined in the video, The Eleventh Hour

 

Chapter Thirteen: Urbanization

-How are cities defined in different countries? 

-What are some general global urban patterns (i.e., what’s going on in LDCs vs. MDCs)?

-Understand general differences in global urbanization rates

-Understand the difference between centralizing and decentralizing decisions for business and residential location

-Be able to distinguish between a city, an urbanized area and an MSA

-What is a primate city?  Can you give some examples of primate cities?

-What is a regional growth center?  Can you give examples of some?  What advantages do regional growth centers have over primate cities?

-Understand the basics of the Latin American, North American and International city models.  How do they differ and why?

-Understand the concept of gentrification and be able to identify the pros and cons of this activity.

-Be able to discuss Borchert’s model of urban development in the U.S.

-Video on Edge Cities: Be able to address the question that accompanied the video
