The origins of Prime Time can be traced back to 1980 when Kathy Phillips, the current manager, started to play on a team in Charleston shortly after she moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois. The original team had various sponsors and names in the early 80’s, first as “Ike’s” and then “Sporty’s”. The team played locally in the Charleston women’s league and seldom participated in tournaments outside of the community. Bobbi Mattingly joined the team as her fast pitch career was winding down in 1983 during the time the team was sponsored by the “Moose” Lodge and placed 5th in the ASA State tournament. Ceci Brinker came on board in 1985 when the team finished 3rd in the ASA State tournament and 5th in the ASA Regionals. From 1986 to 1989, the team was known as McDonalds/Coors Light and had a 2nd place showing in the USSSA State tournament and 4th place in the ASA State. In 1990, Marlene Terrell joined Kathy, Bobbi, and Ceci on the team sponsored by Western Temporary Services when they finished 2nd at the NSA Regionals and won the K of C tournament in Champaign. From 1991 to 1993, the team was known as BOSS and the core players (Kathy, Bobbi, CeCi, and Marlene) experienced their first state championship when they won the ASA State tournament in 1991. The 1992 and 1993 seasons proved to be a test of perseverance as many players were added to and deleted from the BOSS roster. The end of the 1993 season marked the end of commercial sponsorship for the remaining core group. In 1994, wanting to provide their own financial support, Kathy Phillips and Bobbi Mattingly decided to sponsor the team through their joint ownership of student apartment complexes in Charleston. Kathy, Bobbi, CeCi, and Marlene proceeded to systematically surround themselves with quality, dedicated, mature women athletes who still had the desire to compete. And the Prime Time Concept was born….. |
