COURSE DESCRIPTION:  An individually planned internship in a community health agency or organization.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

  • Provide practical experiences in health-related settings under appropriate supervision by competent personnel.
  • Enhance student understanding of the agency/organization’s role in the health care delivery system in contributing to individual or community quality of life.
  • Facilitate development of student’s personal skills and knowledge needed for professional growth and employment.

STUDENT OBJECTIVES
As a result of the internship experience, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the agency’s overall structure and function.
  • Identify the relationship of health education activities to the goals of the agency.
  • Identify the various personnel of the agency.
  • Describe a variety of methods, techniques, and skills used by the agency in fulfilling its purpose.
  • Assess professional strengths and weaknesses during the internship experience.
  • Assess achievement/skill level in one or more of the practicing competencies contained in the Seven Responsibilities for Entry Level Health Educators* mutually agreed upon by the student and site supervisor and described on the Competencies Task Form
  • Use productivity tools for word processing and basic multi-media presentations

CHECKLIST: Use the checklist below as a guide in planning an iinternship experience.
 

INTERNSHIP CHECKLIST

What you need to do to arrange your internship:

___Attend the Intern Orientation Meeting scheduled in the Fall Semester. If you did not attend the fall meeting, make an appointment with the Intern Coordinator immediately.

___Complete the Internship Pre-application Form and submit to the HST Intern Coordinator.

___Review: Internship Application Procedures

___Start investigating possible internship sites. You can review Past EIU Internship Locations on-line to get some ideas and then read the intern logs available in the Intern Coordinator’s office. You can also use the internet search tools provided at the internship website or explore agency or institutional websites of possible locations in a particular geographical area.

___ Review the Internship Site Identification form.

___Identify one (or more if applicable) internship sites you are interested in pursuing as a possible internship location and obtain the information for the site that is needed to complete the Internship Site Identification form. This might require you to contact the potential site(s) to identify a specific contact person. Once you obtain the contact information, complete the following process:

___ Complete the Internship Site Identification Form.

 ___Develop an Internship Resume

___ Submit to the Intern Coordinator:

___4 copies of the Internship Resume

*NOTE: UNTIL YOU SUBMIT THESE FORMS, YOU HAVE NOT OFFICIALLY STARTED THE INTERNSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS.

  • At this point, the Intern Coordinator will send an introductory letter to the site(s) identified on the Internship Site Identification Form. Acopy to you of the letter will be sent to you.
  • After receiving the copy of the letter, follow-up with a phone call to the agency preceptor to arrange an interview.
  • During the interview be prepared to discuss the Competencies and Task Form to identify AT LEAST one of the competencies from ANY of the 7 responsibilities contained in the Responsibilities and Competencies of the Entry-Level Health Educator that will tentatively be addressed during the internship experience.

 ___Provide the HST Intern Coordinator with beginning and ending dates once a verbal agreement has been reached.

  • The Intern Coordinator will then prepare a Student Internship Agreement Form to send to the site. Once it is signed by the site and returned, you will be contacted to sign the Agreement.

 ___Pre-register for HST 4275 during the pre-registration period the semester prior to interning. This is REQUIRED.

AN INTERNSHIP CANNOT START UNTIL THE FOLLOWING HAVE BEEN COMLETED:

  • BEGINNING AND END DATES ARE PROVIDED
  • STUDENT INTERNSHIP AGREEMENT FORM HAS BEEN SIGNED
  • PORTFOLIO SUBMITTED AND APPROVED
  • PRE-REGISTERED FOR HST 4275

___Submit Portfolio by MID TERM of the semester PRIOR to interning.
After all of the above are completed, you will be given access to the WebCt Internship site. This site will provide all of the details and deadlines for the requirements of the internship including:
