Planning for Cooperative Learning

Before beginning a Cooperative Learning project,
a teacher should do the following:

Define the goals that students should achieve

Decide the group size (3 or 4 is best)

Arrange the room so access to each group may be accomplished quickly and easily.

Make a list of materials that will be needed.

Check that there are ample materials for all groups.

Decide the roles that students will play in their groups.

Write a mission statement to begin the lesson.

Have a student evaluation plan in use (including their personal evaluations of their groups).

Teach positive interdependence (each member must share their information for the success of the group).

Identify the criteria for success.
