I began learning Spanish at age ten when my stepmom would teach me colors and numbers. I immediately fell in love with Spanish. I always asked her "What does this mean? And this?" My love of Spanish grew in high school and I decided when I graduated that I was going to continue my education in Spanish. That love has developed into the passion that I know today. I have studied abroad in Guatemala over Spring Break and I plan on studying abroad over the summer or in the Fall of 2008. I plan to attend grad school in the Fall of 2009 and study for a master's in Spanish American Literature. Ideally, I would love to have a job where I lived in a Latin American Country and used my passion every day.

I was lucky enough to grow up speaking Spanish because both of my parents are from Guatemala.  I am also lucky enough to visit Guatemala every year for Christmas to visit the rest of my family, but it was not until my sophomore year of high school that I realized I wanted to do something with Spanish.  I had no idea as to what I wanted to do in my future until I decided to take a beginning teaching class and had to observe a teacher.  I walked away from observations that day knowing exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.  I am now passionately studying to become a secondary Spanish teacher.  I plan on studying abroad in a future semester to further explore and learn about the Spanish language and culture, which is now so clearly beautify through my eyes.

My experience with the Spanish language didn’t begin until I went to high school, where a foreign language class was required to graduate.  I struggled through the first two years, primarily because I didn’t have the drive the learn it; I just didn’t think I would ever use it.  Then that same year I was fortunate enough to travel to Miami, Florida where I was able to experience the exciting people, colors, sights, music, food, and customs of the Cuban culture.  There, even while still in the U.S. I found myself in many situations where I was at a disadvantage by not speaking Spanish.  After that, I found a new motivation to continue learning Spanish, eventually perusing it all the way through college.  I use my degree in many every day situations and it has granted me many exciting study abroad opportunities
